What: ‘Tractor Mac‘ author/illustrator Billy Steers visits Fair Haven in an event complete with haywagon rides.
Where: River Road Books
When: Saturday, 1 to 3p.
Need to know: He’s a hardworking machine who’s learned some valuable life lessons in his day — and who’s got some real wisdom to impart to young readers on topics like friendship, teamwork and not losing sight of one’s goals.
Author and illustrator Billy Steers has created a whole series of popular children’s books around his real-life mechanical pal, a 1948 Farmall Cub that’s painted cherry red and outfitted with eyes and smiling mouth to match the colorful art in the stories.
Since the publication of Tractor Mac Arrives at the Farm in 1999, Steers — a commercial airline pilot by profession — has traveled to schools, libraries and community centers to read from his tMac books (now numbering seven titles).
On Saturday, he’ll tell stories and give demonstrations of his engaging drawing technique at River Road Books. The shop’s owners have arranged free hayrides in connection with the event, with haywagon transportation provided by the folks at Dearborn Market.
There’s no charge to participate, but reservations are recommended, and can be made by calling 732.747.9455.
