Press release from Little Silver Recreation

Gerry Deverin was always there when his hometown of Little Silver needed him.  When the town’s recreation committee initiated a new lacrosse program five years ago, Gerry was one of the first volunteers to step up and help coach and organize the sport.  Now it is time for Little Silver to repay his dedication and remember Gerry, who passed away in March.

At the August  town Council meeting, the Gerry Deverin Spirit Award was presented to two outstanding lacrosse players who demonstrated the  character, dedication  and team leadership  exemplified by Gerry. Graduating from the program and moving on to high school are award  recipients  Aidan Lynch and Annabel Martin.  Over sixty friends and Deverin family members attended the presentation by lacrosse commissioners Dave Ballard and Kathleen Hoffman who reminded everyone of Gerry’s commitment to youth sports as well as the contributions made by the recipients.

The Little Silver men’s’ softball teams will also honor Gerry by hosting their  Annual Softball One Pitch Tournament this Saturday, September 21, starting at 1 pm at the borough’s fields. This is the 13th anniversary of this community event, which will benefit the Deverin Family. Gerry’s wife, Lori, and children, Peter, Ryan and Kathleen will be on present for the “first pitch” opening ceremony which is designed to honor Gerry and show the family support by the community of Little Silver.  Softball teams from surrounding towns  will participate in the tournament along  with six Little Silver teams. Local DJ’s, The East Side Princes, will add to the festive atmosphere. Grilled chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, lemonade, and Ralph’s Italian Ices will be served. Children’s activities are planned. All are welcome to attend.

Rain date for the event is Sunday, September 22. For more information contact Peter Roskowinski at [email protected] or [email protected]. Event sponsorships are available and donations can be made to  The Deverin Family Trust, C/O of Sean G. Deverin ESQ., 160 White Road, Suite 204, Little Silver, NJ, 07739.
