This just in from the Red Bank Police Department:
On December 9, 2009 a Red Bank Police crossing guard sustained
serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle while crossing school
children at the intersection of Maple Avenue and Peters Place.
The
crossing guard, 64 year old John Mego of Red Bank, who also serves
as a deputy fire chief with the Red Bank Fire Department, was struck
at approximately 7:45 am. He was transported to Jersey Shore
Medical Center by the Red Bank First Aid Squad. Mego was admitted
to the hospital in critical but stable condition. He suffered a head
injury, a broken arm, and possible internal injuries.
The driver of the vehicle, John Yrjanainen 47 years old of Red Bank,
was traveling north on Maple Avenue when he struck the crossing
guard. It was raining heavily at the time which may have contributed
to the collision. The crossing guard was wearing reflective rain gear
at the time of the incident.
Mr. Yrjanainen was issued summonses for Careless Driving and
Failure to Comply with a Signal to Stop. The collision is being
investigated by Sgt. Errico Vescio and Ptl. Beau Broadley of the
police department’s Traffic Division.
