A landmark barnlike structure on Red Bank’s West Side is no more.
The former Hance Coal & Feed building on Shrewsbury Avenue was taken down earlier this week by Sourlis International, owner of the Galleria at Red Bank, which plans to expand a surrounding parking lot on the site.
From a redbankgreen story in July, 2008:
Though it’s a familiar landmark, it’s not part of the borough’s inventory of historic structures, says Historic Preservation Commission member George Bowden.
Bowden says the building was the site of Hance Coal & Feed, which became Davis & Hance, one of several coal dealers in town. It was later used as a produce market, but has been vacant for years, he says.
Sourlis won approval a year ago to build a combination parking deck/office building across Shrewsbury Avenue from the site on Galleria property. The start of that project has been delayed by economic factors, however.
Meantime, the Red Bank Farmers’ Market continues to operate every Sunday in the Galleria lot from 9a to 2p.
