DOUBLE HOOPS MILESTONES AT R-FH

Rumson-Fair Haven girls basketball player Kate Miller bagged her 1,500th career point — a school record — and coach George Sourlis notched his 500th victory, today’s Asbury Park Press reports.

The dual milestones came in the Bulldogs’ 58-32 Shore Conference Class A Central win over Manasquan last night, the Press reports.

From the story:

Miller appeared as though she might eclipse the 1,500-point plateau
early. Needing nine points, she converted a layup while drawing a foul
and hit the ensuing free throw to open the scoring. She then knocked
down a 3-pointer on her next attempt to start 2-for-2, but missed her
next five attempts, three of them 3-pointers that would have put her at
1,500.

“I didn’t like playing with the number over my head, so
I was trying to get it out of the way early,” Miller said. “I hit a few
shots and I figured if I could hit one more, I could just play the rest
of the game and not worry about it. I knew it would come at some point,
so I didn’t worry too much, but it was definitely in the back of my
mind after the whole game.”

The game was stopped late in the third quarter for a brief celebration after a Miller basket put her total at 1,501.

Sourlis, whose 23-year record at R-FH is 500-141, has 12 NJSIAA sectional titles, four Group titles and three trips to the Tournament of Champions semifinals under his belt.

“I never coached to reach milestones,” Sourlis said. “I coach to make
kids better people and hopefully them get better at this game that I
love.”

Here’s what he had to say about Miller:

“The thing that’s special about Kate is she’s not all about points,”
Sourlis said. “I don’t think people would note her as a ‘scorer’. She
handles the ball, she rebounds, she defends, she guards the other
team’s best players. She’s the consummate complete player more than she
is a scorer, which makes 1,500 an even more remarkable feat.”
