The Red Bank Police Department, faced with a pair of retirements this year and rising concern about crime, last night grew by two probationary officers.
Both Nicholas Maletto and Milton A. Gray IV grew up in the borough and went through the public school system, a fact that delighted the officials who commented on their hires at last night’s Borough Council meeting, where the pair were sworn in.
“These two are second- if not third-generation Red Bank residents,” said Council President and Police Commissioner Art Murphy. “The council has always encouraged hiring” from among local candidates, he said.
“This is a great night when we can recognize into our borough family two longtime residents, especially ones who are products of the borough school system,” said Mayor Pasquale Menna.
Gray and Maletto will begin basic training later this month and join the department upon their anticipated graduations in June. Both have been working as dispatchers — Gray for the past year, and Maletto since the end of last year. Maletto began his law enforcement career as a special officer with the borough in 2004.
Police Chief Mark Fitzgerald said the additions bring the department staff to 42. Scheduled to retire in coming weeks are Deputy Chief Ernest Van pelt and Lt. Morris Collier.
