WEST SIDE CLEANUP, TOYS FOR SEAN & MORE

west-side-cleanup1
An effort to spruce up the streets of Red Bank’s West Side in April 2008, above, will be reprised this Saturday.

Done3A West Side cleanup effort, a toy drive for a boy at the center of an international custody battle, and several education-related fundraising efforts mark this edition of Done Good.

The cleanup, scheduled for Saturday, June 20, starting at 8a., is the second annual edition of the effort, dubbed “Operation Inasmuch.”

Organized by members of Pilgrim Baptist Church, the community volunteer work day tackles projects such as street cleaning, landscaping, painting, knitting, car washing and home cleaning for residents unable to do for themselves.

For further information or to register, please call the Pilgrim Church Office at 732.747.2343.

Hobbymasters gathering toys for Sean Goldman

Red Bank toy and game store Hobbymasters is seeking donations for toys to provide to Sean Goldman upon the Tinton Falls boy’s hoped-for return from Brazil after a five-year custody battle.

“The kid’s got toys for a four-year-old and he’s almost 10,” says Hobbymasters co-owner Alan Placer.

The store is matching, dollar-for-dollar, purchase of toys and gift certificates up to $2,000. Click on the store name link above for more info.

Scholarship in name of war vet

Vietnam War vet Kevin Henry and his wife, Priscilla, have donated $1,000 to seed a technology scholarship at Red Bank Regional High in honor of the late Brian Connelly, an Army soldier who was killed by an explosive device in Iraq in February.

The Henrys, of Toms River, did not know Connelly, an RBR grad who was among one of the earliest students to attend RBRÂ’s Academy of Information Technology. He studied IT in college and used his skills in serving his country in Iraq as a member of the 40th Engineer Battalion, Task Force 1-6, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division.

Together with members of Shore Chapter #701 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the Henrys raised another $6,000, which they presented to the school June 3 in a ceremony at the war vets monument. Connelly’s name was added to the monument last month.

“If this scholarship could help educate a young person who will go to Washington and keep us from getting into another unnecessary war, like Vietnam, I would be very happy,” Kevin Henry said in a press release issued by the school.

Donations may be made to the Brian Connelly Scholarship at Red Bank Regional High School, 101 Ridge Road, Little Silver, NJ, 07739. For further information, contact RBR Superintendent Edward Westervelt at 732-842-8000, ext. 1247 or via email.

Foundation boosts tech at Little Silver schools

The Education Foundation of Little Silver has grants totaling $47,386 for the purchase of new technology by the Markham Place and Little Silver Point Road schools.

Requests were submitted by teachers and administrators of both schools for the best and latest technological equipment such as ELMO document cameras, digital cameras, Senteo’s, and SMART boards.  The Education Foundation board members carefully considered each request and granted the schools with the equipment they felt is most in need, and will best serve the students.

“We are a group of parents who understand the importance of providing our children with the latest technology,”  said foundation co-president Cynthia Neff.

Remember: Nothing makes a Red Bank friend happier than to hear "I saw you on Red Bank Green!"
