Press release from Brookdale Community College
Community members are invited to take a rare look into the lives of Holocaust victims during a public presentation at Brookdale Community College on Monday, January 26.
Scheduled for 7 pm in the Navesink rooms of the Student Life Center building, the program features researcher and writer Ann Weiss (pictured) in a presentation of some of the more than 2,000 personal photos she uncovered during a trip to the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp in 1986.
The photos, featured in her book The Last Album: Eyes from the Ashes of Auschwitz-Birkenau, were confiscated from holocaust victims transported to the camp in 1943.
Weiss will also discuss some of the personal stories behind the photos, which she uncovered through historical records and interviews with surviving family and friends.
“Historians have surmised that, out of all the transports, only the photos from this one transport miraculously survived,” said Weiss, the daughter of two Polish holocaust survivors. “These were the photos they couldn’t leave behind.”
The program, hosted by the Center for Holocaust, Human Rights and Genocide Education (Chhange) at BCC, will commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day, as well as the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz on January 27, 1945.
Admission is $10, with current Brookdale students and Chhange members admitted free of charge. Take it here to register for the event.
