LINCROFT: ARTISTS GO TO SUMMER SCHOOL

quon-4323203Works by Fair Haven-based artists Mike Quon (“Boardwalk” above) and Jill Kerwick (below) are on display during this week’s HONORING SUMMER II exhibition at Brookdale College’s CVA Gallery.

jill_kerwick_photo-220x203-8779433School may be out around the greater Green, but on the sprawling Lincroft layout of Brookdale Community College, a select group of local creative people is willingly being kept “after class” for a chance to salute the too-short season of sun and fun, in a supportive (and climate controlled) setting.

On display as of today, June 24, and opening officially with a public-welcome reception this Friday evening, June 26, the group show Honoring Summer II commandeers BCC’s Center for Visual Arts (CVA) Gallery in a display that includes dozens of paintings, photography, mixed media and other visual artwork from 12 area artists — among them Fair Haven favorites Mike Quon (whose colorfully stylized studies of local scenes and landmarks have proven very popular among Monmouth County art aficionados) and Jill Kerwick.

In the words of curator Marie Maber, it’s “an especially dynamic mix of collage, paintings, photography and other work by some of the best visual artists in our area” — and as the BCC art professor could attest, it’s an event that carries with it an enticing ulterior motive.

On view through Monday, June 29, the installation is “part of an annual effort by CVA staff to engage and inspire community members and local students taking summer courses at Brookdale” — a shot of artistic adrenaline designed to spur participation in BCC events and programs, as well as those offered by such guests as John “Vigg” Viggiano. The proprietor of the Asbury Park gallery space (and hands-on “creative hive”) The Collective Art Tank has regularly hosted introductory sessions in everything from digital New Media to the ancient art of book binding, and Vigg is among the participating artists expected to be in attendance during Friday’s reception that begins at 6 pm.

Parking in Lot 2 is recommended for the event, and further info can be had by calling (732)224-2881 or emailing [email protected].
